Gratitude is SELFISH
For the past 2 years, every Wednesday I send out 3 gratitude texts.
I learned from a mentor, who does this daily.
Just a short text expressing gratitude for a friend, a past experience, or just watching them from a distance.
If you’re a friend, you’ve probably got one of these.
One thing to note, is most people never received one before, & you can tell.
After doing this for the past 2 years, I’ve come to realize
It’s my most selfish act.
Here’s why -
It’s very little effort to think about this person for 30 seconds..
It’s very little effort to think of something about them to be grateful for..
It’s very little effort to type it out and hit send..
But 10 times out of 10,
I get a message back telling me how thoughtful I am,
How awesome I am,
How I’ve impacted their life,
A cherished memory I forgot about,
A quality about myself that’s valued.
And I get fuel for the week.
For very little effort, I get so much back.
That makes this the most selfish act I do.
There’s been weeks where I’ve felt very little to be grateful for,
And sometimes the thing that will get you out of the mud,
Is hearing from someone else (who knows you and cares for you)
A couple of things that you COULD be grateful for.
And it brings me to this question I heard from Brad Lea,
What if tomorrow we only woke up with the things we thanked God for the night before?
You’d realize there’s so many things about yourself you’d love to keep, things you’d hate to lose.
