The Reason You’re Frustrated In Business
So I was talking with my mentor and boss, And the conversation went like this..
Hey B, it seems after hearing you speak a couple times over the weekend, and hearing your colleagues all talk, that you guys who are mentoring all these high level entrepreneurs, and executives, that you’re almost simplifying everything down..
Is that a common theme amongst these people that seek your insight?”
And he came back with
“ Yeah! As an entrepreneur it’s in our nature to complicate things, and blow them up. Then they get so complex they seek higher level people, to unfuck their situation.. and that’s what I do, I unfuck their business..”
And we went back and forth on a couple points, and these are the things you should ask yourself and question.
We over complicate for a couple reasons..
1) Pride, we start this business or we land a job, and we start out solving a specific problem.. We are a distinct solution to a big issue. And we start to pick up momentum and grow.
Now in our nature, we blow things up to be more grand, and more complex, because it serves ourselves.
We get to explain our business at the cocktail party, and we explain it with all these innovations and nuances and vague qualities that don’t precisely explain what we do, all so that the response we get is “Woooow, that’s so interesting!.. I don’t know how you do it!.. Etc”
Be concise in your business, mission and vision. Whether you’re speaking with your team, investors, or even yourself!
2) Doubt, or fear, or uncertainty.
Start out the same, we build a business around a solution.. And it moves forward, we move forward.. Business begins to grow, money starts coming in..
And our inner thermostat, or our insecurity comes in thinking “It can’t be this easy that I’m making progress!”
And we think, this has to be more difficult! This has to be harder, so we create weird habits and practices in our business and optimize to early.. We scramble everything up.. Because “working” on the business brings us back down to that “working” feeling..
When REALLY, yes the business was truly making progress, from just showing up as the solution to that problem.. We over anticipated the grown process to be harder and later than sooner.
Simply keep going..
3) Blurry vision..
Which shows up as Majoring on MINOR things..
We were eating açaí bowls at the time.. and he was saying “Take this açaí bowl”
Lets say we were serving up the best all natural simple açaí bowl that tasted great! And we start selling, like crazy.
We have this weird mechanism in our bran that tells us, “to get more it must mean we need to innovate more, we must improve im the places we’re NOT paying attention to!” And we create these imaginary blind spots!
So what happens is, we end up using hand carved organic wooden spoons,
or hand picked bananas sourced from Venezuela
or zero waste take out bags
and it ends up fucking us because we now have to raise the price,
the customer no longer wants to pay the premium price
and now we have these headaches because of sourcing and our manufacturers.. blahblahblah
All because we wanted to improve in odd places thinking it was going to take us to the next level..
Whem really,
YES..
Getting to the next level is really..
Simply serving up the best tasting açaí bowl..
Its that simple..
So wrapping up, get ahead of the curve by keeping your business simple, solve a specific problem for a specific person, and do it more consistently and better than anybody else.. then.. do it again..
Much love✌🏽
